What are working days?
Working days are weekdays when work is normally performed — Monday through Friday. Saturdays and Sundays are rest days in the standard business calendar. Poland uses a five-day system where the standard workweek is 40 hours spread across 5 days of 8 hours each. Working days also exclude legally mandated public holidays like New Year's Day, Constitution Day, National Armed Forces Day, and Christmas.
Public holidays in Poland
Poland has 13 legally mandated holidays: January 1st, Easter Sunday and Monday, May 1st and 3rd, Constitution Day (May 3rd), Whit Sunday, Corpus Christi, August 15th, November 1st and 2nd, November 11th, and December 25th and 26th. When a holiday falls on a weekend, employers are not required to provide a replacement day off, which distinguishes Poland from many other European countries.
Leave and absences
Employees in Poland are entitled to annual leave of at least 20 days with a permanent employment contract. Proportional leave applies for shorter tenure. Beyond vacation, employers may grant unpaid leave, request leave (4 days per year), or leave for child care. Planning leave requires considering both working days and holidays to maximize time off.

A year has 261 weekdays and about 226 actual working days
Project plans are usually drawn in weekdays, and weekdays are not working days. Take out public holidays and annual leave and roughly one weekday in seven disappears. That gap is why the standard 2,080-hour year overstates the time actually available by about 15%.

Worked example
Planning against 2025, with ten public holidays and twenty-five days of leave.
- 2025 contains 261 weekdays
- less 10 public holidays → 251
- less 25 days of annual leave → 226
- 226 of 261 weekdays is 86.6%
226 working days, or 1,808 hours against the conventional 2,080 — a 15% overstatement. On a 70,000 salary the true cost of an hour of output is 38.72, not the 33.65 that dividing by 2,080 suggests.
Reading the result
- The 2,080-hour convention is a payroll figure, not a capacity figure. It is correct for calculating a salary and wrong for planning delivery, and using it for both is how schedules quietly acquire a 15% shortfall.
- Weekday counts move with the calendar: 2024 had 262 and the three years after it have 261. Over a multi-year plan that drift is small, but it is not zero.
- Public holidays vary sharply by country and often by region within one. A plan spanning several countries cannot use a single holiday count, and the differences are large enough to matter across a quarter.
- This still assumes every remaining day is fully productive. Sick leave, training and onboarding all come out of the 226, so treat it as a ceiling rather than a forecast.
Common questions
- Why not just plan in weekdays?
- Because roughly one weekday in seven is not worked. On a quarter of about 65 weekdays that is nine days you have counted and will not get — enough to turn a plan that looked comfortable into one that overruns.
- Which hourly figure should I use?
- Divide by 2,080 for payroll, since that is what the salary is defined against. Divide by actual working hours when you are costing output or pricing work, because that is what an hour of delivered work genuinely costs.
