Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the 1980s. The name comes from a kitchen timer shaped like a tomato. It involves dividing work into 25-minute sessions of intense concentration, followed by a 5-minute break. After four cycles, a longer break (15-30 minutes) helps maintain mental freshness.

Tips for students

Adjust session length to your concentration - 25 minutes is a starting point. Use breaks actively: stand up, stretch, breathe fresh air. Eliminate distractions: phone in airplane mode, quiet music or noise-cancelling. Log progress after each session for motivation. Gradually increase study time, don't try to study for hours at once.

Ten hours of study time buys eight hours and twenty minutes of studying

Sessions are packed into the time you enter including their breaks, so a ten-hour block at fifty minutes on and ten minutes off holds exactly ten sessions — and ten sessions of fifty minutes is 500 minutes at the desk. The other hundred minutes are the breaks, which were always going to be there but rarely appear in anybody's plan.

How it works

  • Adds your break length to your session length to get the true cost of one cycle.
  • Divides your total available time by that cycle to count how many sessions fit.
  • Rounds down, because a session you cannot finish is not a session.
cycle = session length + break length
sessions = ⌊total hours × 60 ÷ cycle⌋
actual study time = sessions × session length

Worked example

Ten hours available, fifty-minute sessions, ten-minute breaks.

  1. cycle = 50 + 10 = 60 minutes
  2. sessions = ⌊10 × 60 ÷ 60⌋ = 10
  3. actual study time = 10 × 50 = 500 minutes
  4. 500 minutes is 8 hours 20 minutes of the 10 hours entered
  5. breaks account for the remaining 100 minutes

Ten sessions, and eight hours twenty of real work inside a ten-hour block. Planning ten hours of study and scheduling ten hours is how a plan quietly runs seventeen per cent short.

Reading the result

  • The break-to-session ratio is what sets the loss, and it is easy to check: a fifty-ten split costs you a sixth of the block, while a twenty-five-five split costs the same sixth. A twenty-five-ten split costs closer to a third.
  • Work backwards if you have a fixed amount of studying to do. To get ten real hours at fifty-ten you need twelve hours of clock time, which is a different conversation with your calendar than ten.
  • The rounding down is deliberate but hides a partial cycle. Ten hours at forty-five-fifteen fits exactly ten sessions; ten hours at fifty-five-ten fits nine with fifteen minutes left over, and that leftover is real time you can still use.
  • None of this measures whether the studying works. Sessions and breaks are a schedule, and a schedule you follow badly beats a better one you abandon — the numbers here are worth less than the habit they support.

Common questions

Why is my actual study time less than what I entered?
Because breaks are counted inside the total rather than added on top. Your ten hours has to contain both the sessions and the rests between them, so the studying itself is the total minus every break you take.
How do I plan for a fixed number of study hours?
Multiply by the cycle divided by the session length. At fifty-minute sessions with ten-minute breaks that factor is 60 ÷ 50 = 1.2, so ten hours of real studying needs twelve hours of calendar.
